The Detroit Lions offense is on a different level this season. 1st in NFL scoring, and 5th in offensive yards – The team not only boasts the league’s No. 1 passer in Jared Goff, but also boasts a top 3 rusher and three receivers ranked in the league’s top 30. On top of the legends in the game.
Gibbs ran for his second touchdown of the season, his second of the day – taking his career total to an impressive 58 total touchdowns, his fourth in just five games of the season. He broke the NFL record held by the incomparable Barry SandersGibbs is the league’s all-time leading scorer for a player under the age of 25.
Perhaps the scariest part is that Gibbs won’t turn 25 until March 2027 when he holds the record — meaning he’ll have 12 more regular season games to make his record as untouchable as possible. In the year No player has eclipsed 50 total touchdowns since Todd Gurley turned 25 in 2018 and Maurice Jones-Drew in 2009. It seems like every decade we have a player who can put up those numbers, and it’s Jahmir Gibbs’ time.
Gibbs is on pace to finish this season with 1,714 rushing yards, 826 receiving yards and an impressive 31 total touchdowns. That puts him in the same company as LaDainian Tomlinson’s record-breaking 2006 season when he finished with 28 rushing touchdowns. Gibbs is having a breakout year, eclipsing Christian McCaffrey’s all-time season with 2,392 yards from scrimmage and 19 touchdowns in 2018.
As impressive as Gibbs is, it’s worth praising how elite that entire 2023 running back class is. It only gave us two of the best running backs in the NFL, but there were gems that came to define their teams in the draft.
The NFL is seeing a new resurgence of running backs, and these four players are helping to define the era. At the top we have Bijan Robinson and Jaimere Gibbs, both of whom are ready to take on the mantle as the league’s most versatile all-purpose backs. Smashmouth is great for anyone who loves football, and the sky’s the limit as to how far their career will go.
