Real Madrid it was a sixth straight win in all competitions as they got away easily Santander Racing 3-0.
Madrid, having beaten Barcelona in the Clásico seven days ago, needed to maintain their excellent run to stay within three points of their rivals at the top of the LaLiga.
And they took the lead in the 11th minute, albeit in controversial circumstances, when Kylian Mbappe converted a penalty, awarded and upheld by VAR after he went down in the box with seemingly minimal contact.
Jude Bellingham gave the home side a mountain to climb 10 minutes later, with Yan Diomande’s stunning volley putting the game beyond doubt on 36 minutes.
Arda Guler spurned a chance to open the scoring when he narrowly turned in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross, but moments later Mbappe controversially broke the deadlock, sending the keeper the wrong way after going down with Matteo Prati at the nearest defender.
Replays suggested very little, if any, contact from Prati, but the decision stood and Mbappé made no mistake from 12 yards.
Mbappé has now scored against all 24 LaLiga clubs he has faced since joining Madrid, and Jose Mourinho’s men ruthlessly ensured there was no way back for Racing.
Iker Luque forced the returning Thibaut Courtois into a fine save as Racing looked for an immediate response, but their deficit was made more daunting when Guler dispatched the marauding Bellingham on goal and the England star showed great composure to round Julen Agirrezabala to slot home.
But the pick of Madrid’s goals was Diomande, who left Agirrezabala with no chance when he fired into the top-left corner from the edge of the box after Racing had failed to clear a corner.
Agirrezabala prevented Guler from making it 4-0 before the break, with his efforts for the rest of the match an exercise in damage limitation.
Mbappé crashed an effort against the post and then fired over the crossbar in quick succession just after the hour, before Racing looked to have been handed a lifeline when the referee pointed to the spot for handball to Aurelien Tchouameni.
However, that decision was overturned after a VAR check with Tchouameni’s arm deemed to be in a natural position when a bouncing cross hit him in the box.
There were no further scares for Madrid, who saw Bellingham denied a second by the offside flag before substitute Endrick blushed in stoppage time. They were unable to produce the most emphatic scoreline but hope their trips to AEK Athens in the Champions League and Valencia in their final LaLiga game before this month’s international break will be similarly comfortable.
