Lamar Jackson will be placed on injured reserve after suffering a thumb injury on the first play of the game. Baltimore Ravens‘ 36-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
An enticing quarterback battle between two-time MVP Jackson and 2024 MVP Allen never materialized as Jackson did not return, and backup Tyler Huntley also suffered an injury.
That left the Ravens relying on their emergency third baseman, undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, who was always fighting an uphill battle.
Allen threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns as the Bills cruised to the win, improving to 6-1 as the Ravens dropped to 4-3.
Then the day got worse for the Ravens, as it was later reported ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Jackson requires surgery and will be placed on IR.
That could doom the Ravens’ hopes of making the postseason, with Baltimore at the bottom of a hugely competitive AFC North, which is led by the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2) after crushing the Cleveland Browns (5-3) 27-6.
The Cincinnati Bengals are hot on the heels of the 5-2 Steelers after surviving an overtime thriller with the Tennessee Titans. Quarterback Joe Burrow had six touchdowns, throwing for five and running for the game-winner in a 43-36 victory, although he was also intercepted three times.
The Detroit Lions ended the Minnesota Vikings’ unbeaten start to the season when they handed their NFC North rivals their first loss with a 19-15 victory at Ford Field.
Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown for the Lions, who took the lead for good on Jared Goff’s fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Jameson Williams. However, the win was marred by what appeared to be a serious head/neck injury suffered by Lions linebacker Jack Campbell.
The Bucs make a strange story
Elsewhere, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made some rare NFL history with their 16-0 victory over their NFC South rivals, the Atlanta Falcons.
The dirty conditions in Tampa made passing nearly impossible, but that wasn’t a barrier for the Buccaneers, who largely avoided trying to throw it.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield couldn’t complete any of his three pass attempts, but it didn’t matter as three field goals and a rushing touchdown by Bucky Irving propelled the Bucs to victory.
His victory made the Buccaneers the first team since the 1974 Bills to win a game without completing a pass.
Cardinals stun Cowboys with wild finish
The Arizona Cardinals pulled off a remarkable comeback to stun the Dallas Cowboys 33-30 in overtime.
Arizona trailed 17-3 in the third quarter, but found life after quarterback Jacoby Brissett was benched by Gardner Minshew.
Dallas appeared to have the game in hand after kicking a field goal to go up 30-24 with just over a minute left, only for Minshew to lead what looked to be a game-winner as he connected with Michael Wilson with six seconds left to tie things up.
However, Chad Ryland incredibly missed the extra point and gave Dallas a shutout.
It was one the Cowboys lost, though, and Ryland redeemed himself with a game-winning 42-yard punt.
The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up a week that saw them trade guard Quenton Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner with a crushing 42-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, while the Las Vegas Raiders won a shootout with the New York Jets 38-33.
