The Bears are getting pushed up on their depth chart.
Despite third-string quarterback Case Keenum’s Monday night win over the Eagles, the Bears will likely turn to second-stringer Tyson Bagent on Sunday against the Jets.
Via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Bagent is the match is expected to start.
Although the Bears have tried to maintain the identity of the starter a secret, the signs have pointed to Bagent. He took first-team reps during practice Wednesday and Thursday — and possibly Friday.
Coach Ben Johnson has not announced a starter for the Week 4 game. Does he need it? Bagent is listed as the backup to starter Caleb Williams. Bagent did not play Monday night, as he was able to practice all week while in the concussion protocol.
Keenum started Week 3 against the Eagles. With Bagent out, the Bears have decided not to ignore the default quarterback setup, even though Keenum managed to engineer a 27-7 win over the Eagles.
Undrafted by Shepherd, Bagent started four games in 2023, his rookie year. Since then he has made eight appearances. Most recently, he replaced Williams in the fourth quarter of a Week 2 loss to the Vikings. Bagent almost won.
