Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has a penchant for making headlines, and he did once by filing for bankruptcy in the Northern District of Texas. Rice is said to be owed $3.45M in unpaid bills — despite having $6M in career earnings, and the 26-year-old is on the verge of getting the first major payday of his career as he prepares to hit free agency in 2027.
Various legal issues are cited as the main reason for Rice’s financial problems. Court documents obtained by ESPN Rice revealed that he claims to have more than $13,000 in his checking account and more than $677,000 in personal assets — more than $1.8 million in pending lawsuits, as well as outstanding legal fees. Rice also doesn’t own any real estate and still rents out — he also indicated that he used his Super Bowl ring as collateral for legal fees. The details of the documents are as follows:
It is unclear who owes the remaining debt, totaling nearly $2 million.
Rice’s NFL future is assured, as he’s been a difference-maker when he’s been on the field — which has allowed him to receive another contract, one that’s significantly larger than his rookie contract. That said, the plethora of off-field issues ensure that he won’t be able to make the money he could on the market without legal trouble. Rice was recently sentenced to 30 days in jail for testing positive for THC in Dallas, a probation violation stemming from a 2024 car accident.
Now the 26-year-old is in the water financially, with no Super Bowl ring in hand and seemingly nothing to show for his $6 million in earnings over the past four years.
