Kyle Shanahan started his 10th season in charge of the San Francisco 49ersand he can look forward to many more campaigns as a head coach after an offseason trade that only came to light on Friday.
Shanahan, by Tom Pelissero from The Ringer and Netflixsigned a contract extension with the 49ers this offseason.
The 46-year-old was previously said to be under contract with the 49ers through the 2027 season. The length of his new deal has not been disclosed, but the extension will see San Francisco retain a coach who has established himself as one of the NFL’s best and most influential long-term players.
Shanahan recorded his 92nd overall win (83 regular season, 9 postseason) as a 49ers head coach this week as San Francisco crushed the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in their Week 1 matchup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The Niners have been to the playoffs in five of Shanahan’s previous nine seasons in charge. Last season’s divisional-round loss to the Seattle Seahawks marked the first time in any of the 49ers’ postseason campaigns under Shanahan that they haven’t reached at least the NFC Championship Game.
Shanahan has led the 49ers to two Super Bowl appearances in the 2019 and 2023 seasons, though each ended in heartbreaking losses to the Kansas City Chiefs.
