Munster have confirmed that CEO Ian Flanagan will step down from his role at the end of October, ending his tenure in the province.

Flanagan, who was appointed to the role in 2019, informed the Munster Rugby Board of his decision and the IRFU and the province announced that an interim chief executive would be appointed in the coming weeks.

The recruitment process for a permanent successor will then begin, leaving Munster with one more off-field change as they go through the weeks of the new season.

Flanagan’s time at the helm has included a central role in the development and delivery of Munster’s €7.3m Center of Excellence in Cork, long-term investment in player development and the wider game across the province.

Munster rugby chairman Ger Malone thanked Flanagan for his work and highlighted the Cork development as one of the key projects completed during his time as chief executive.

“Ian has served Munster Rugby with dedication and commitment during his time as CEO. He has played a central role in the development and delivery of the €7.3m Center of Excellence in Cork, which represents an important long-term investment in player development and the wider game across the province.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Ian for his contribution to Munster Rugby and wish him every success in the future.”

Flanagan added: “Leading my home province has been a huge privilege. I would like to thank the many people I have worked with during my time with Munster Rugby, including our volunteers, staff, sponsors, coaches and players.

“I would also like to thank our fans for their unwavering commitment to Munster Rugby over many years. I wish the province every success in the future.”

The decision comes shortly after former Munster and Ireland Captain Peter O’Mahony publicly called for a “change of administration” in the province.

“Munster has to help itself,” he said For the love of rugby podcast. “I think Munster need a bit of a management change. I think they need to look at who’s looking after the place properly.”

“I’ve been on the record a few times. Look Leinster and having Leo Cullen there for so long, and every decision Leo made for however long he was there had Leinster’s best interests at heart.

“I know they’ve lost a few games and whatever, but I know for sure he likes the S&C coaches and all the schools, he’s all over the clubs, he’s all over the Leinster delivery.

“Munster needs someone who has Munster’s interests at heart and looks after the place better than it is now.”
