I feel like everyone was waiting for me to be that guy. And I tried to be that guy, and I couldn’t. And I felt like I was letting a lot of people down. And I hated it.”
Gargano explained that during times of trouble, his son Quill would ask him when he was going to “get the treasure,” or win a championship. After another loss on SmackDown, Gargano returned to find his wife, Candice Lera, punching Quill in the face.
“He was showing me Quill just crying, bawling his eyes out, saying, “Daddy is lost and he’s not going to get the treasure. There is no treasure,” Garagano said. “It broke me. So it was easier in my head not to try to get up then and fail and let people down. And I’m not saying it’s right, I’m not saying it’s going to work that way, but that’s what I did.”
Gargano snapped out of it when CM Punk challenged him to an Undisputed WWE Championship match in Gargano’s hometown of Cleveland in September.. Gargano credits the fans’ reaction to him finally being able to stop being a jerk, even after he lost to Punk.
“Even when I didn’t give them any reason, they still believed in me,” Gargano said. “And it just showed me… I don’t know. If I try, if I really, really try, I think I can do anything.”
