Spurs Notes: Harris, Wembanyama, Castle, Fox

Tobias Harris not yet suitable for Spurs since the signing of the two-year contract for 31 million dollars contract with them this summer while he’s dealing with a left calf strain and it’s not clear he’ll make his debut any time soon, Tom Orsborn writes for the San Antonio Express-News.

According to the head coach Mitch Johnsonthe team is taking a “very, very methodical” approach to Harris’ rehab as they look to work the veteran into their rotation.

“We’ve just got to be patient and make sure we do things right and see it through in terms of being ready to play in the NBA with the (fast) style of play that we want” Johnson said.

Teams around the league are taking a cautious approach to calf strains this season in an effort to better understand the connection between these injuries and Achilles tears.

“This is a type of calf, so as we’ve seen, it can be tricky” Johnson said. And so I think the medical (staff) has done a great job of trying to keep him involved and trying to continue to progress in the right direction, but at the same time, staying patient and not getting ahead of ourselves and realizing that we’ve got 70 whatever games left.”

We have more from Spurs:

  • Victor Wembanyama is averaging a career-high 28.0 points per game through six games this season despite shooting career lows from three (29.7%) and the free throw line (74.4%). Despite his offensive success, he still lacks something that many of the league’s great scorers have had, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic: characteristic move. The Spurs star said that while he appreciates the legacy of the move, how Kareem Abdul-Jabbarskyhook, it focuses not on legacy, but on the efficiency of development to go to the movement. “If this is to be a landmark move, it must be natural,Vembanyama said. But now you can control it by going to movements and places. Because the characteristic move is somewhat of a narrative, you can’t control it. Because you have to win the game.”
  • Castle Stefan entered Saturday’s game averaging 17.4 points in 30.8 minutes, but was held scoreless in 22 minutes against the Wolves, adding three turnovers and four fouls to four assists and five rebounds. After the game, Johnson revealed that Castle had been suffering from migraines, which he overcame to prepare for the win. according to Orsborn. “A lot of people wouldn’t go to work if they felt like Steph Castle, and sometimes he doesn’t get enough attention in this sport” Johnson said.Steph Castle came to work tonight and we needed every second of it and he probably didn’t deserve it.”
  • De’Aaron Fox sometimes ceded the limelight to younger stars such as Vembanyama and Dylan Harperbut on Saturday he put up a stat line the franchise has rarely seen, – writes Orsborn. He scored 22 points on 80 percent shooting while adding eight rebounds and seven assists. According to Orborne, it is only the fifth time Spurs have achieved such a mark and it shows how effective he has been to start the season, especially as an attacking organiser. “We know what to go to him“, – said Wembanyama, despite the fact that the team leads the results with 43 points. “We know how to put the ball in his hands. He knows to go after the ball. And he also acted defensively. So it’s a real point guard.”
