Race to Turin: Medvedev can retake fifth on Thursday as de Minaur waits for Cobolli or Berrettini

Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton have already qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals (November 15-22) and all three will play on Thursday. Zverev, who faces Talon Grikspur, is a long way from becoming world No. 1 in the PIF ATP rankings on Monday. They belong to Kobolli (3680), Medvedev (3660), Arthur Fils (3475), Tiafoe (3380) and Rafael Jodar (3184).

yesterday

Wednesday thinned the field. Francis Tiafoe lost to Lorenzo Musetti in the first round in Vienna, and Jakub Mensik to Adrian Mannarino in the second round, and Medvedev defeated Daniel Merida. Novak Djokovic beat Hugo Humbert and Taylor Fritz beat Rinki Hijikata in Basel. De Minaur’s win took him to 2,930 points, Djokovic to 2,890 and Fritz to 2,735. Medvedev’s win in the first round left his total unchanged, as only a player’s best results outside of Grand Slams and Masters 1000 tournaments are taken into account.

Medvedev vs Knorr, Vienna, second round

Medvedev leads the head-to-head 5-1 and has a five-match winning streak after Sunday’s title in Almaty. He leads all players this season with 39 wins on hard court and is looking for his 100th career quarterfinal appearance. Nori is 2-6 against top-10 players this season.

Cobolli vs. Berettini, Vienna, second round

The winner meets de Minaur in the quarterfinals. Koboli defeated Grigor Dimitrov in the first round, a personal-best 36th win of the season, but he is 2-7 against the Italian on hard courts. This is their first meeting and Berettini has reached the quarter-finals in all four of their previous meetings in Vienna.

Djokovic vs. Struff, Basel, second round

Djokovic leads Jan-Lennard Straff 8-0 and is 6-0 at the ATP 500 level this season after winning the Beijing title this month. Victory would make the 39-year-old the oldest quarter-finalist in the tournament’s history, tied with Jimmy Connors who reached the stage in 1991 at the age of 39.

Jodar-Vacherot, Basel, second round

Ninth in the race, Jodar will face Valentin Vacherot for the first time in his Basel debut. Reaching the final would guarantee the 20-year-old his first PIF ATP Rankings debut on Monday. Vaccherotti owns the wins over Fils, de Minaur and Musetti.

File vs. Michelsen, Basel, second round

The Phils defeated Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals in Brussels last week and have won their last 10 meetings against the Americans since the start of 2025. A win would give him his 11th quarter-final appearance of the season.
