I’ll admit right here that I’ve done a complete 180 on Swerve Strickland, demanding a Texas Death rematch for the AEW World Triathlon Championship held by his arch-nemesis “The Executioner” Adam Page, Brody King and The Bandido. I shouldn’t have doubted AEW’s ability to tell a story about Strickland and Paige. I began to consider Coffey and Austin Creed’s social media posts about Texas’ death, and this week brought me right back.
I liked Coffey and Creed coming out to Strickland tonight with the challenge since they weren’t on Dynamite to discuss it last week. They were stunned and said they came to AEW to face the best of the best, but after that they just want to get out of time and go home safely to their families. Kofi said it best. they haven’t been there long enough to even begin to hate anyone to the level it takes to face Texas in the death match. As they hit their hip turnbuckle as they announced they would be the new “AEW World Trios Champions”, a fired up King came out demanding to know where Bandido was and that’s when I knew things were about to get real.
Creed asked King where Strickland was, but Paige showed it first, who only continued to plead with King not to agree to the terms of Strickland’s death. I loved that he even told New Level that he knew Strickland would show them his true colors in time, and that the time was now since both he and Bandido were mysteriously missing.
They weren’t away for long, however, as Prince Nana came out to point to a tron that showed Strickland carrying the Bandido mask to the side of the fallen, bloodied ROH World Champion. If he wasn’t teetering on the edge of being unstoppable already, he certainly is now, and that’s Strickland at his best. He stated once again that the Full Gear game was not enough and demanded the game he requested because he wasn’t going to ask for it again.
I’ll be interested to see what happens here if New Level and Page and Brodido both deny the death of Strickland Texas, but I’m sure that’s where we’re headed. It’s probably Paige who finally gives in and Strickland pushes her over the edge. I’m interested in seeing not only Coffey and Creed in Texas Deathmatch, but King as well. I’m totally into this, and the fact that there’s still two weeks until Full Gear makes this even more interesting.
