The Los Angeles Rams’ trip to Australia proved to be worth more than simply losing a game. Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett will undergo knee surgery and be headed to injured reserve, a team source confirmed. The athletics.
Garrett suffered a knee injury early in training camp and will be out for several weeks, mostly through rest and recovery. Camp has practiced twice since returning to the Rams’ practice facility before the Week 1 trip to Melbourne, Australia.
But Garrett was not alone in the matter 27-7 bankruptcy at Melbourne to the San Francisco 49ers. He went in and out of the game and finished without a sack, tackle or quarterback hit, and he said he wasn’t healthy after the game. “This was the worst version of myself,” he said.

Now, Garrett will miss at least the next four games on injured reserve. If he can rehabilitate his knee by then, he is eligible to return Oct. 18 against the Arizona Cardinals.
The Rams traded Garrett from the Cleveland Browns for a major loss. Los Angeles sent a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick to Cleveland for the two-time Defensive Player of the Year.
Landing Garrett was key to convincing three-time player of the year Aaron Donald to come out of retirement to join this year’s team, even though Donald traveled to Melbourne to end a two-season absence.
Now, Donald and Garrett won’t line up against each other until at least Week 6.
It’s unclear why the Rams chose to travel with Garrett and play with the 49ers when Donald landed. Coach Sean McVay said Garrett’s absence from practice was just a precaution and that they believe Garrett is healthy after the Week 1 loss.
Without Garrett, Byron Young and Josiah Stewart will play dominant roles, with Coby Turner and Braden Fiske playing more as edge options on running downs.
The Rams will look to improve elsewhere after posting zero sacks and just two quarterback hits against the 49ers. To help with that, they have another blockbuster acquisition on defense: two-time All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, one of the lone starters in the loss to the 49ers.
The Rams will host the New York Giants next week on “Monday Night Football.”
