Ultimate Fighting Championship contract by technical knockout David Cabral
in
Dana White Candidate Series.
Lapa (7-0) faced Cabral (7-1) in the DWCS Season 10 finale on Tuesday at Meta Apex in Las Vegas. After a competitive opening lap, Lapa took control in the second and stopped Cabral 19 seconds into the third.
Douglas Lapa, 27, earns UFC contract with third-round TKO of Davi Cabral in DWCS Season 10 finale
Lapa entered as the betting favorite, but Cabral tested him early with powerful punches and a guillotine attempt before Lapa clawed his way back into the fight.
Lapa increased the pressure in the second round, landing combinations and thwarting Cabral’s takedown attempts. He carried that momentum into the final frame, dropping Cabral with a two-punch combination before subsequent ground strikes forced a stoppage.
“This guy is a great jiu-jitsu guy,” Lapa said during the 10th season of DWCS
10th week post-fight press conference. “He’s well-decorated and tough. But I was able to hold myself together.”
Lapa said he could have secured the second round finish with a few more seconds.
UFC CEO Dana White also praised Cabral’s resilience in signing Lapa. During the announcement, White mistakenly identified the 27-year-old as 34, correcting himself at a subsequent press conference.
“Cabra has a tank,” White said. “I didn’t even think the guy was human until he knocked him down in the third round. I always say this: It takes two to make a great fight. He was definitely a great partner for you tonight. I guess the only way I can explain it is: Another 34-year-old I’m excited to see in the UFC. Congratulations, welcome.”
