Eight games played. Four points for the United States. Four points for the Europeans. If there’s anything we learned after Friday’s opening day game at the Solheim Cupis that the next two days should be good at Bernardus golf course in the Netherlands.
Friday’s biggest drama was saved for last.

On the par-4 18th, the European duo of Carlotta Ciganda and Julia Lopez Ramirez and Americans Nelly Korda and Lauren Coughlin they were all square in their four-ball match – and Ciganda’s clubface on the tee was not square. She went straight. On his second shot, he played the adjacent first hole. From the right of the green with his third shot, he launched to 10 feet. Before her, the Americans were in a par, and Lopez Ramirez broke through.
Then came the last blow on Friday.
Ciganda made a putt on her.
Each side earned half a point. And the Europeans and Americans will enter Saturday tied at 4.
“I’m enjoying this week,” Ciganda later told Golf Channel. “I just like to play for the team, for my teammates. Anna (captain Anna Nordqvist) is a good friend of mine, so I just want to win for her. So I played with Julia, my good Spanish friend. It was amazing.
“We had a tough match against Nelly and Lauren, very consistent, but we fought hard and at least we got half a point, which I think is really important.”
