Without quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Ravens want to be able to rely on running back Derrick Henry. That plan isn’t working.
In Thursday night’s 33-10 loss to the Jaguars, Henry managed just 57 yards on 17 carries. This continues what has been happening all season, with Henry trying to do everything without Jackson on the court.
It was a bad omen in Week 4 against the Titans when Jackson left in the first half with an ankle injury and Henry was ineffective in the second half. In the first half of that game, with Jackson on the field, Henry had seven carries for 38 yards, an average of 5.4 yards per carry and one touchdown. In the second half with Tyler Huntley, Henry had 16 carries for 35 yards, an average of 2.2 yards per carry and no touchdowns.
Jackson has played a snap since that Titans game, and the story has been the same, with Henry unable to do anything.
Overall this season, in three and a half games with Jackson, Henry has 73 carries for 339 yards, an average of 4.6 yards per carry and 97 yards per game, and seven touchdowns. In five and a half games without Jackson, Henry has 102 carries for 350 yards, averaging 3.4 yards per carry and 64 yards per game, and one touchdown.
At 4-5 and in last place in the AFC North, the Ravens, who entered the year with Super Bowl aspirations, are on the verge of a season collapse. They need to turn things around, and they need Henry to turn things around.
