Sunday night’s Rams-Broncos game had an interesting postscript stemming from coach Sean McVay’s postgame press conference. It was shortmainly because it started and ended before most of the reporters covering the team got to the media room.
On Monday, McVay opened his afternoon availability with an apology.
“I’m sorry I missed you yesterday,” McVay said, via a transcript provided by the team. “I was going for a few minutes and there was a misunderstanding part of the time. After a question was asked, there was enough silence (to end the press conference).
“It was never my intention to miss any of your questions. If there was any kind of misunderstanding, it definitely wasn’t. I apologize for that, but (Communications VP) Artis (Twyman) just made me aware of it. I understand my role and my responsibilities to be able to speak, whether it’s after a win or if we don’t want to get results that we don’t want at least. I know some of our reporters were just messing with time, but I was there for a few minutes and obviously, it was an emotional game, but if there was any misinterpretation, I apologize for that.
It’s good that McVay apologized. Still, it’s hard to imagine McVay making a 90-second appearance if the Rams had won the game.
We saw and heard a sharp, gritty McVay last December after a tough, hard-fought game against the Seahawks. He is intense. He is emotional.
After all, he is human. And while, under most circumstances, he’s able to keep those emotions in check, he may have said something he didn’t want to say if given repeated chances to talk about some of the calls that were made Sunday night.
