The new putter from Mizuno does not seem low torque, and that it doesn’t balance like a typical.
The new neck option Mizuno M.Craft X modular putter linethe M.Craft XZ, orients the shaft directly through the CG of the putter, ensuring that the putter balances exactly where you hold it instead of wanting to return toe-up. This creates what the company calls a truly zero-torque design.
“This was all about putting zero bias into it,” Mizuno director of golf Chris Voshall told GOLF. “So our goal on all of these is to shoot the shaft axis directly through the CG. So a little bit different than the balanced lie angle or the frame to frame, like how it runs on a zero torque or a low torque design. So we call it the infinite toe hang. It’s going to hang where you put it.
“We’re not trying to force the putter in one direction. We’re saying where you are, you should stay there.
This is now the fourth option of the neck in the M. Craft Family X and Mizuno also introduced two new forms of back-piece – the 2, a Triple-Wide form that should appeal to blade users; and the 3rd, a Dome-Mallet shape with additional alignment features.
As with the rest of the family, the new neck and back pieces are all interchangeable with the existing options, bringing the total number of combinations to 20.

What’s really new with M.Craft XZ – and why you should care
A true zero torque
The low torque putter category is not well suited for players who have a lot of spin in their swing. Voshall described his own shot as a great example of someone who was unable to take advantage of the minimized rotation.
“Slightly – it’s not a good thing – he’s aiming slightly right and I just pulled him a bit, but it’s a consistent move,” he said. “I know my putting stroke, because if I put the laser on the address, it is not aligned with the laser at impact.”
With a low torque putter, it is difficult for him to square the face at impact. But by completely minimizing twisting forces with the true zero torque design, the new M.Craft Z naturally wants to stay put throughout the race, allowing Voshall to pull it as usual.

A traditional non-traditional look
The unique reverse hydraulic neck was chosen after testing several different neck options, including unique curves, tilts and center shafts.
“We had three different versions of the necks that we were testing and we did a lot of internal testing – what looked the best, what looked the cleanest, what felt the most natural, what provided the most consistent CG location – and the reverse plumber was the winner in everything we saw,” said Voshall.
The result is a family look at the players that puts the shaft out of the visual path of the ball, while keeping the axis exactly where Mizuno wanted.

modular customization
The new Triple Wide and Dome shapes make for five different back-piece options to customize your putter, which essentially means that Mizuno now offers five different zero torque options when combined with the Z neck.
“It gives the player the ability to create zero torque in so many different options. So it becomes more of a fitting story of who do you want to be?” Voshall said. “We’re late to the zero-torque game, but we’ve brought it into an option where you have tons of different customizations you can do with it.”
