Mavericks Notes: May, Flagg, Johnson, Risacher, de Larrea

The Mavericks we are now entering an exciting year Kyrie Irving set to play along Cooper Flagg for the first time. They also have a new, first NBA head coach Dusty Maywhich has come to the fore, but is in no hurry to make important decisions.

While Flagg and Irving represent the two obvious contributors, Maye says he still isn’t sure what the final starting lineup will look like. Grant Offset writes for the Dallas Sports Journal.

“We haven’t settled on it yet,May said. We’re more or less looking at two-man and three-man combinations, one-man and five-man combinations. So please let me know, please, anyone who has guesses on the top five and the second five, because I have no idea at this point. We will keep trying.»

Flagg believes May’s freshness and enthusiasm is already rubbing off on the team during training camp, Mike Curtis writes for the Dallas Morning News.

“The energy was really high,” said the 19-year-old wing.”Different is definitely the word I would use to describe it. So far we’ve had a really unique culture with the new staff and everybody. It was great to have everyone in the same environment, to have everyone on the same page. I really enjoyed the energy and atmosphere.”

We have more from Mavs training camp:

  • Morez Johnson Jra top-10 pick by the Mavericks in 2026, was limited in training camp by a sore calf, Offset writes. “We’re just handling his workload” May said.”I think he’s been in every other live session today, so it’s just load management at the moment.” Johnson isn’t the only Mavericks big man dealing with leg injuries Saint Aldama still coming back from an arthroscopic procedure in March Derek Lively II is still limited after the right leg surgery he had in December.
  • A trade two years after being selected No. 1 overall was not the start of his NBA career Zachary Ryzaker imagined, but with the Mavs facing an Oct. 31 deadline to exercise their $17.4 million fourth-year team option, the former Hawk is confident his new team believes in him. “(President of the team Masai Ujiri), (general director Mike Schmitz), coach Dusty, when I called them on the phone after I was traded, that’s when I knew they were excited to have me” – said Rizacher for Offset. “And it was very important for me to see that I was part of an organization where they wanted me to be here and then to be successful as well. It plays a big role and it’s a big motivation for me.” Riesaker believes his ability to make quick decisions, play off the ball and be a versatile defender will help him fit in well in lineups with Flagg and Irving.
  • Johnson isn’t the only rookie adjusting to life in the NBA. The Maus also added a point guard Sergio de Laurea after trading for him on draft night and he went to work knowing what to expect after years of playing in Europe. “It is different” – said de Laurea transmitted by Offset. “The court is bigger, but so are the bodies. But let’s say that maybe there is more space in the paint compared to Europe. But here, otherwise, the empty space in the middle, (but) the centers are going to block your shot.” The 6-foot-6 guard knows that smaller defenders will try to get into his body and pressure him off the dribble, so he works hard on how to handle the ball in different situations to better prepare.
