After initial information that the parties were approaching an agreement, Italian outlet Superbasket says the free agent big man Kelly Olynyk is on track to join BC Roma and the deal is expected to be officially completed in the near future.
Olynyk, 35, was the NBA’s 13th overall pick in the 2013 draft and has played 842 regular-season games over the past 13 seasons with eight teams. Known for his range ability, the Canadian forward/center is averaging career averages of 9.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 21.8 minutes per game while shooting .486/.369/.794.
After averaging at least 19 minutes a night in each of his first 12 years in the NBA, Olynyk played a modest role off the bench in San Antonio last season, averaging just 8.6 mpg in 42 regular season games before logging 35 minutes in nine playoff games.
The veteran free agent has been linked with Warriors and Spurs this summer and went to Paris take part in a mini-camp with several Spurs players. However, Golden State addressed their need for a frontcourt stopper by signing George Niangand San Antonio will cross the luxury tax line if they add a 15th man on a minimum salary contract.
BC Roma is a newly founded club in Rome co-founded by the former general manager of the Mavericks Donnie Nelson and the Lakers guard Luka Doncic and will compete in Italy’s top national league (LBA) and the Eurocup this season.
