October 28 – Ligue 1 has postponed three Saturday matches at the request of public authorities as violent protests continue across France.
Lyon’s home game against Angers, originally scheduled for 8.45pm on Saturday, will now be played on Sunday afternoon following a request from local government officials, the Professional Football League said on Tuesday. Nice’s home game has been brought forward to Friday evening, and Lorient’s has been moved to Monday evening.
Hundreds of thousands of people marched across France last Saturday in protest over the rising cost of living and poor conditions in schools. The demonstrations have stretched police and security resources, and the country’s worst civil unrest in years has included attacks on town halls and public buildings.
Moving the fixtures frees up police and security personnel who would otherwise be needed at stadiums during weekend protests. Football matches in France already require significant police control, especially for matches involving traveling fans.
The changes add to an already difficult period for French football. The league is preparing to put its broadcast rights back on the market next month after years of instability, with Ligue 1+ carrying matches nationally and beIN Sports no longer carrying a matchweek. Rescheduling at short notice creates complications for broadcasters, clubs and supporters who have already made travel arrangements.
The LFP has not said whether further changes are expected if protests continue in the coming weeks.
