Manchester United boss Carrick talks Bruno Fernandes ‘decision’: ‘I don’t need any assurances’

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick says Bruno Fernandes is “fully committed” after remaining an unused substitute for Sunday’s home defeat to Bournemouth following the captain’s public criticism of the Premier League strugglers’ tactics.

The reigning Premier League Player of the Season said the decision not to press Como man-to-man in United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat last Wednesday was “from the manager and the staff”, which saw the Portuguese playmaker moved to the bench for the Cherries’ 3-0 thrashing in the Premier League.

“It was a decision based on what we felt about the game,” he said Carrickwho was widely reported to have had clear talks with his star player on Tuesday.

“That’s it. Bruno is fully committed to this football club. I have no problem with that. Let’s move on and make decisions as we go.”

Should Carrick and Bruno Fernandes have resolved the situation, the 32-year-old could return to the starting line-up for United’s trip to Chelsea Saturday (12:30 GMT).

“I have to say the lads are hungry,” Carrick suggested, adding that his side are “waiting” to try and end their eight-game winless streak in all competitions against opponents who are six points above them.

“There’s an intensity, a bit of an edge, a disappointment and a hunger to do better.”

united Director of football Jason Wilcox is said to have decided that Carrick will get more time despite his side’s dire form in the former Red Devils midfielder’s first full season in charge.

Carrick, who turned United into a top-flight team and guided them to Champions League qualification after being appointed as an interim starter in January, reiterated that his position has not been considered.

“I don’t really need guarantees from anyone,” said the 45-year-old, whose exit is considered a formality by many fans and pundits.

“I understand the job, the responsibilities and what it entails. I care what the fans think. I care how it feels in the stadium and traveling to the games.”

“I care about what we give them and what they see. I don’t really pay attention to anything else. I know this job, I know what it brings and what we need to do to be better. I don’t need anyone else to tell me.”
