A.J. Brown ready to put turbulence behind him. It starts with another Super Bowl chase

As morning light seeped through the curtains in his room at the AJ Brown Hotel near New Orleans’ French Quarter, he awoke for the first time as a Super Bowl champion.

In the year He spent February 2025 partying with his Philadelphia Eagles teammates and the Lombardi Trophy. He was repeatedly told that she would never be his life. His name will forever live with the honor of “Super Bowl Champion.”

Brown looked at his phone and saw that it was coach Nick Siriani Wearing a Brown Starkville High School jersey to Monday morning’s news conference.

But Brown couldn’t shake the idea that he felt something. He did everything he set out to do. He grew up wanting to play baseball, switched gears to football, won a state championship with his high school friends, was loved by every major SEC coach, was a second-round NFL pick, was named a Pro Bowl wide receiver, earned a nine-figure contract and now won the Super Bowl in fashion — thank you.

This had to happen. This was the end. In a different story, this will be a time of satisfaction. The feeling of all those extra hills running fast and weight lifting finally paid off.

But that wasn’t how Brown felt. He felt… Incomplete.

“I was trying to feel what I thought we should feel,” Brown said. “And in that moment I just learned, it’s not the trophy, it’s not the ring. It’s the journey. It’s growing up based on you and the locker room convos with your teammates and your teammates, and the kids jumping in the pool after practice. It’s the little things. The team and the friendship. The destination isn’t all about the little things.”

There was reason to think Brown would be an Eagle for the rest of his career. One day maybe there will be a picture of him outside the stadium.

But Brown wasn’t focused on his legacy. The next season, Philadelphia’s offense changed. His role diminished. Things are getting old. He wanted out.

That quickly a Trade to New England in Junea move the Patriots hoped secured their next Super Bowl berth.

But it leaves Brown in a strange position. He’s not even 30, and he already has a ring — with three All-Pro honors and six 1,000-yard seasons. What’s left to prove?

“I have nothing left to prove,” Brown said this summer.

After the trade finally happened, Brown didn’t feel jittery the first day he joined his new team. He knows why he’s here, bringing in a first-round pick at a high price to help the Patriots explode in the Super Bowl window opened by coach Mike Vrabel and quarterback Drake Maye last season.

Brown’s final years in Philadelphia were troubled by drama, both real and imagined. Reading books on the side. A fight with the coach. A strained relationship with quarterback Jalen.

But there was excitement when Brown joined the Patriots. He was getting a fresh start. An opportunity to write a new chapter.

He realized that the Super Bowl didn’t make him feel satisfied. It’s the path to that point—and most importantly, who’s on that path with. Now, this trade and this season give him a chance to start that journey again.

“I know it’s not heaven, but it’s close,” Brown said of joining the Patriots.

Now that the cranes have been lifted following a seven-figure renovation, you can see dancing lights and a large video board at Starkville High Stadium, signs showing seven state football championships.

“You’re talking about a school that prides itself on football,” said Travis Garner, Brown’s baseball coach in Starkville. “You’re talking about a place where the head football coaches make more money than the principal.”

It’s a town of 24,000 that packs 10,000 into the stadium for football games.

“You could rob the town on Friday nights and nobody would notice because everybody was at the game,” said Ricky Woods, the school’s former football coach.

It’s where Brown grew up. After his parents divorced when he was still a teenager, Brown lived with his father on a large plot of land in the city’s 16th Ward. They had a long driveway off a dirt road.

Baseball was his first love. They made a makeshift bunker in the grass, and Brown lobbed bombs into the woods. Brown’s dream was to play in the majors. He was a field bowler who could run and was a leading batsman.

“I played at the University of Alabama. I coached college baseball,” Garner said. “And he was the best defensive player I’ve ever seen.”

Major League scouts flocked to watch Brown play, even as football threatened to end his baseball dreams. A baseball scout told Garner that his team was so interested in Brown that they were considering taking him in the second round of the draft – until Brown promised to quit playing football.

It was a great offer. Brown wasn’t even the best shooter on his high school team. And was he still going to be a second round pick?

“And the scout told me that,” Garner said. He can move to center field in the big leagues. Today. Worst case scenario, we have a talented defensive center. And if anything else comes up, I’ll look like a genius.’

According to Brown, he probably would have been a baseball player if not for Nick Saban’s visit. When the veteran coach came to recruit Brown before his junior year, it was then that he realized where football would lead him.

“That’s when I felt like I could really do it,” Brown said. “I still wasn’t thinking about the NFL, but if Nick Saban was coming here (I think I could play college football).”

Since then, Brown’s recruiting has been a circus. Ole Miss sent every coach on their staff to visit him. In one of LSU’s games, a helicopter landed at the high school.

That high school team is loaded. Willie Gay, who is entering his seventh NFL season with the Miami Dolphins, was on defense. Brown dominated on offense. They advanced to the state championship game.

Before that game, Brown visited Coach Woods. Woods asked if he was scared.

“’AJ, are you getting on the bus?’ I told him. Yes, sir. ‘Then I said, no, I’m not really bothered,’ Woods said.

Brown caught 10 passes and scored a touchdown as Starkville cruised to an easy victory and the state title.

After his standout career at Ole Miss, Brown hosted a party with friends and family to watch the NFL draft and see if he could sneak into the first round.

“I wouldn’t even say ‘sneak in.'” Brown said, “I thought I was going in the first round.”

Brown wasn’t selected until the 51st pick, the night after the party, when he was taken by Vrabel and the Tennessee Titans. Brown grew up a Patriots fan, always played with them at Madden, and knew Vrabel as a former player.

But Vrabel’s style first clashed with Coffee’s. Vrabel gives everyone a hard time. He pushes. It doesn’t matter if you are a high draft. He repeatedly went in on Brown for missed assignments.

“It was tough,” Brown said. “I didn’t like it at all. He was very cruel to me, and I didn’t really understand. “Honestly, it didn’t really register for me until he let go of what he was doing and how he was pushing me.”

Brown starred on Vrabel’s 2019 Titans team that went to the AFC Championship Game. After his third season, Brown hoped to be paid by the team he drafted. Instead, the Titans traded Brown to the Eagles.

“I was hurt,” Brown said. “I didn’t take advantage of that. I felt like I deserved to get paid in Tennessee, and I wanted to stay in Tennessee.”

Of course, the years in Philadelphia were fruitful. A look at the Super Bowl in its first season. A Super Bowl victory two years later.

But after four years, things went awry. The magic that once made his head coach rock his high school jersey has dissipated. The same is true for relationships with horses. He wanted a clean slate.

A trade after last season was a good one. But because of the way the contract was structured, the Eagles couldn’t move him until June 1st. So Brown sat and waited. Finally the first day of June arrived and the deal for the veterans was announced.

“That was it: My bags were packed, and I was ready to go,” Brown said. “And I wasn’t in a rush to leave, but I was excited to go to the next level.”

Brown stood with his family at the Patriots practice field in mid-August. The 29-year-old is now married. The boy was running. His wife, Kelsey, has another on the way.

Brown took a minute to process how things had changed and how they were. “I’m still in awe,” he said.

Memories of the past were all around him. He just finished a joint practice against the Eagles. Much has been made of that revelation He didn’t talk to Horts. He ran from the business and hugged him hand in hand.

Brown was at peace with being separated from the Eagles and was happy with his landing spot. And he was back with his first NFL coach who drove him nuts. But attitudes are changing.

“It’s great,” he said of his relationship with Vrabel. Because I’m older now, and I know where he’s coming from and it’s coming from a place of love. He wants his players to be good.

Of course, he knows the pressure to wait. The Patriots reached the Super Bowl last year. They traded Brown to help them over the mound.

The Patriots begin their regular season on Wednesday with a Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks. Now that they have the Browns, will they face the defending champions differently?

Two weeks before the opener, Vrabel took the team to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Look at the Super Bowl rings and the breasts of former greats. Patriots legend Andre Tippett showed them around.

Brown took some time for himself. The Hall of Famer will hold the Lombardi Trophy for the upcoming season, until it is awarded in February.

Brown stood alone and looked at the trophy. A lot has happened since February 2025, when the Browns became Super Bowl champions and decided the trophy wouldn’t change who they were. The most important thing was to decide the way to get there.

And ready to start a new journey.
