In a sponsor’s outing on the Wednesday night before the event, there was a shot closer to the pin from just off the green. Of course, Couples was the winner of the shootout – but it was how he won that is the stuff of legends.
With daylight fading over the clubhouse, Couples stepped to his fairway and, with a smooth as ever drive, lifted his ball onto the green. As the ball rolled toward the hole, the Couples turned and began to interact with those around them.
Those who kept their eyes focused on their dance will witness something they will not soon forget. About 20 seconds after the ball landed on the green, it finally came to rest – right at the bottom of the cup.
Naturally, the crowd went crazy. The couples hugged and hugged all around him, and the fans had a story that they will tell for decades.
Was it the best shot Coppie ever hit? It’s hard to say. But for a man who has made a living from his unmatched aura, this only adds to his legacy.
