Noah Okafor came off the bench to score a late game winner as Leeds United to beat Tottenham 1-0 at Elland Road, ending their five-game winless streak in the Premier League.

The Switzerland international struck in the 79th minute after combining with substitute Harry Wilson, rewarding a dominant second-half display from Daniel Farke’s side.

Tottenham struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the game, with Roberto De Zerbi’s side unable to capitalize on their recent run of three straight league wins.

The game was also overshadowed by two controversial VAR decisions in the first half, including a Jayden Bogle challenge that forced Mathys Tel off injured.

The VAR controversy dominates the goalless first half

Both teams started the match cautiously at lunchtime, with neither goalkeeper being seriously tested during the opening exchanges.

Leeds slowly began to gain ground as Tottenham looked to carve out space on the counter-attack through Mohammed Kudus and Omar Marmoush.

The hosts were left frustrated when referee John Brooks waved away their penalty appeals after an apparent handball by Matheus Fernandes.

The incident was reviewed by VAR, but the officials ruled that the ball had hit the Tottenham midfielder high on the arm, in an area not considered an offense under handball law.

There was further controversy when Bogle caught Tel with a high challenge that left the French striker needing treatment.

The Leeds defender appeared to step on Tel’s ankle, prompting a lengthy VAR review for a possible serious foul.

However, the referees ruled that the challenge was reckless and not dangerous enough to warrant a red card, allowing Bogle to remain on the pitch.

Tottenham manager De Zerbi was visibly frustrated by the decision, especially as Tel struggled to continue.

The winger limped off in the 43rd minute, with Dominic Solanke brought on as a substitute.

Leeds almost immediately capitalized when Bogle sent a cross into the box, but Lukas Nmecha could only direct his header straight at Antonin Kinsky.

Tottenham had a chance of their own shortly before the break when Kudus sent an attractive cross into the six-yard box.

However, neither Archie Gray nor Solanke could make contact, allowing Leeds to escape.

Fernandes then fired wide from distance as the teams headed into half-time with the score still goalless.

Okafor makes the difference as he dominates Leeds

Leeds emerged for the second half with greater attacking intent and began to take control of proceedings.

Farke’s side pressed Tottenham higher up the pitch and enjoyed long periods of possession, forcing the visitors to defend deeper as the half progressed.

Sean Longstaff came close to breaking the deadlock, but Kinsky produced an excellent save to keep out the midfielder’s effort.

Ao Tanaka also squandered a promising chance when he shot over the crossbar, while Nmecha hit the post during a tackle that was later ruled offside.

Tottenham struggled to establish any offensive momentum, with their midfield unable to service Solanke and Marmoush.

De Zerbi tried to change the direction of the contest by introducing Dejan Kulusevski, Conor Gallagher and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Gallagher provided some additional attacking threat, but Leeds continued to look the most likely team to score.

Farke also turned to his substitutes, bringing on Okafor and Wilson in an attempt to find a breakthrough.

The changes paid off in the 79th minute.

Melvin Bard delivered a cross from the left, which Wilson controlled inside the penalty area before cleverly slotting the ball past Okafor.

The Swiss striker took a touch to create space before driving a powerful finish past Kinsky and into the bottom corner.

The goal sparked celebrations at Elland Road, although there was a brief delay while VAR checked whether Wilson had handled the ball in the build-up.

Premier League table

  • position 1, 2, 3, 4: Promotion – Champions League (League stage)

  • position 5: Promotion – Europa League (League phase)

  • position 18, 19, 20: Relegation – Championship

Replays showed that no offense had occurred, and the goal was allowed to stand.

Tottenham tried to respond in the closing stages, but their attacking play continued to lack the precision needed to trouble the Leeds defence.

The visitors brought forward more players in search of an equaliser, leaving themselves vulnerable to counter-attacks, but Leeds handled the closing minutes effectively.

Despite late pressure from De Zerbi’s side, the hosts held on to secure three valuable points.
