Two-time World Cup winner Bongi Mbonambi is back in the Stormers on a one-year contract.
The Springbok playmaker, who made 74 appearances in his first spell at the club between 2015 and 2021, moves to Cape Town from the Sharks after his contract there was terminated by mutual agreement following a disciplinary dispute.
Mbonambi is available for selection with immediate effect and is set to display in the United Rugby Championship meeting with Ulster at DHL Stadium on Saturday.
With strikers André-Hugo Venter, Deon Fourie, Lukhanyo Vokozela, Almero Keizer and Luca Bakkes all injured and JJ Kotzé currently serving a suspension, the Stormers have turned to Mbonambi to help them through a difficult period.
“We all know the quality that Bongi brings and it is fantastic that we were able to agree this deal in such a short time. We are grateful to both Bongi and Sharks for helping to make this happen,” said director of rugby John Dobson
“Bongi became a Springbok while playing for us and proved himself among the best in the world in the middle of the front row.
“We’ve been hit hard by both injuries and suspensions to our bitches, so we’re delighted to welcome Bongi back into the fold,” he said.
Mbonambi said he was looking forward to making an impact with the DHL Stormers again.
“I spent many amazing years playing for the DHL Stormers, so it’s fantastic to be back in Cape Town surrounded by so many people I know and respect.
“This club is in a great place and I want to do everything I can to contribute to that goal,” he said.
