UFC 333 came down to a complex stylistic interplay for the challenger. The champion says Evloev would do better against other featherweights.
Volkanovski (29-4) stopped the previously unbeaten Evloev (20-1) by TKO in the second round in Saturday’s main event at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The Australian defended his featherweight title, finishing Evloev with a flurry of strikes at 4:54 of the frame.
Alexander Volkanovski calls himself Movsar Evloev’s nightmare after their UFC 333 featherweight title fight
Volkanovski praised Evloev’s performance, but argued that their styles were the difference. He believes that despite his first pro loss, the Russian will remain a formidable opponent for the rest of the division.
“I thought he still looked great. Again, I’m just the wrong guy,” Volkanovski said of Evloev in an interview with Freak MMA. “I feel like even if that same Movsar—see, it’s hard for people to understand or believe. If that Movsar fought someone else in the division, he’s going to walk right through them.”
“Walking through them, but I’m a different man. I believe it was the best movsar there ever was. People probably don’t understand it, but I believe it. I’m just a nightmare for him. Watch his next fight. It’s his best performance yet. Remember I said it,” he added.
Evloev entered the game with a 20-0 record and wins over contenders including Diego Lopes, Lerone Murphy and Aljamain Sterling. Volkanovski’s striking and scrambling defense helped him end the Russian’s undefeated run.
Alexander Volkanovski believes that his winning mover Evloev “walks through” everyone else in the division, calling himself a Russian nightmare. “When that Movsar fought anybody else in the division, he walks through them. Walks through them. But I’m a different guy. I believe that was the best Movsar there was. People probably don’t understand it, but I believe it. “I’m just a nightmare for him. Check out his next fight. This is his best performance yet. Remember I said so.”
