Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua: Cardiff Council asked to approve 1am ringwalk at Principality Stadium | Boxing News

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are set for a 1am walk-off in their heavyweight boxing clash in Cardiff.

The Principality Stadium will host the biggest fight in British boxing history, with the bout expected to take place on Friday 11 December.

However, the expected schedule for the bout has now been revealed, which will see the main event take place in the early hours of Saturday morning UK time.

An application to Cardiff Council confirmed that the walk is scheduled to start at around 1am, after a short live music performance, and the stadium will remain open until 3.30am.

Those times would suit peak viewing time in the United States, with Saudi Arabian boxing supremo Turki Alalshikh, his American business partner Dana White and broadcaster Netflix initially pushing for New York’s Madison Square Garden as the venue.

Despite Cardiff being announced as the venue last month, changes required to its premises license to allow the early hours fight to take place have yet to be secured.

In a bid to get the necessary permits, Millennium Stadium plc has applied to the council to extend opening times at the venue “on a very limited one-off basis”.

The application seeks to extend the hours allowed for boxing and wrestling entertainment from an existing cutoff of 1am to 3am on December 12.

A council spokesman said: “This is to facilitate the proposed Anthony Joshua v Tyson Fury fight, where the walk starts at 1am.”

The license change requires an extension for live music on the same date, to facilitate a short live performance immediately before the ring walk.

It also proposes an extension for recorded music, late-night refreshments and alcohol supply until 3am, with the stadium closing at 3.30am.

The applicants added that the roof will be closed throughout the event and there will be increased security and administration arrangements.

An application to vary a premises license must be advertised, including the display of a notice at or on the premises, for 28 consecutive days.

Members of the public and other authorities can make an objection to the Principality Stadium application, or a comment in support, until November 3.

If no relevant representations are received, the council must accept the request.

If objections are made, then a council hearing will be held to consider them.

This may result in modifications to the terms of the license, or the application may be refused altogether.

After the fight was announced last month, Cardiff Council leader Chris Weaver said: “The competition at the Principality Stadium has the potential to bring significant economic benefits to the city and attract visitors from across the UK and beyond.

“Major events provide a welcome boost to local businesses, support jobs and showcase Cardiff to a global audience.

“There are still a number of arrangements to be finalized with the organisers, including any changes required to the Principality Stadium venue licence, but we look forward to welcoming fans to the city for what promises to be an unforgettable night of boxing.”
