Lando Norris produced a stunning lap to pip Kimi Antonelli to pole position at Formula 1’s new Madring circuit in thrilling qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver had not looked in contention for pole at any point in the session but found great pace in his final run to beat championship leader Antonelli by 11 thousandths of a second.
Max Verstappen, who had entered pole contention earlier in the session, pipped Lewis Hamilton for third as the Ferrari driver made a strong recovery after crashing in final practice earlier on Saturday.
Charles Leclerc starts behind his Ferrari team-mate in fifth, while Antonelli’s Mercedes team-mate and closest championship challenger George Russell could only be sixth.
