Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal of the season Manchester United but was left frustrated after Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ late strike got 2-2 draw at Everton on Sunday.
The Slovenian striker came off the bench at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and looked to have repeated his impact from last season, when he was a regular difference-maker after coming on as a substitute.
However, Maitland-Niles’ spectacular effort in the final minute denied United all three points and left Sesko disappointed despite his own contribution.
The 23-year-old had missed much of pre-season through injury and has returned to action in recent weeks, making substitute appearances against Hull City and Ipswich Town.
He needed less than 20 minutes to score against Everton.
Sesko makes an instant impact
Sesko came on from the bench and quickly gave United the lead with a powerful header from Luke Shaw’s cross.
The effort proved too much for Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and looked to have put United on course for a valuable away win.
Instead, Maitland-Niles produced a stunning late strike to earn Everton a point and leave Sesko and his team-mates frustrated.
Speaking to MUTV after the game, Sesko admitted the late equalizer was particularly difficult to accept given how close United had come to victory.
“We’re very disappointed, of course, because we were so close (to winning) and yet so far,” he said.
“To concede a goal like that in the last minute, it’s painful for everyone because everyone was giving everything to try to win the game.
“Everybody here wants that. In moments like this when it’s decided by one last shot, it’s very painful.”
Sesko happy to be back
Despite the disappointment of the result, Sesko was pleased to find the net and continue his return to full form.
The striker said the goal remains one of the best feelings for him, especially when he can contribute directly to United’s results.
“For me, it’s the best feeling when I’m scoring, especially for the club like this,” Sesko said.
“When I can give the goals and points for the team, it’s my job at the end of the day. It’s nice to be back with the team to experience all the games again.
“Of course I wish we had won today, but we can’t change that.”
