Everton v Coventry preview
Frank Lampard returns to Everton for the first time since his sacking in January 2023 on Friday night as his Coventry City side visit the Hill Dickinson Stadium. In their way is a David Moyes team that has begun to find its feet.
Everton have won back-to-back games against Newcastle in the space of a week. They beat the Tynesiders 3-1 in the EFL Cup, then won 1-0 at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Monday night.
For all the good things the Toffees are doing, the build-up has been dominated by the ongoing saga surrounding Jack Grealish. The on-loan Manchester City striker was ruled out of both Newcastle games due to a disciplinary issue, with reports suggesting he missed a training session. The England international will not be considered for this clash, although Moyes said: “Jack is not available. I wouldn’t give you the plan, but we will work with Jack again soon.”
Grealish’s absence has been offset, however, by the improved form of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The former Leicester and Chelsea midfielder received an England call-up on Friday and Moyes understands why his name is in the conversation.
“As I’ve said many times, thank God I don’t have to pick the England team because England have a lot of good players to pick from,” said the Scot, who will equal Harry Catterick’s record for most appearances in charge of Everton on Friday night with 592. “Kiernan is getting back to last year’s levels. In the last two games he’s been really good.
“I hope he does (get a call-up). He definitely has to knock on the door. The position he plays in, there are so many good players. As long as he continues to do well at Everton, we’ll be happy, but if he gets recognized by England, that will be great.”
Coventry return to the Premier League this season after a 25-year absence, and Lampard’s side have had a mixed start. They are 16th with three wins and six losses from their first nine games but have won three of their last five, including a 3-1 win over Sunderland on Saturday. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni scored, before Enzo Le Fรฉe’s late penalty.
Their away form is the big concern with the Sky Blues picking up just three points on the road.
Goals have been hard to come by for both sides. Everton and Coventry have scored nine Premier League goals each in nine games with only Nottingham Forest (six) and Sunderland (seven) scoring fewer.
The teams have not met in the league for a quarter of a century. The last meeting was in 2001, when Everton won 3-1 at Highfield Road.

Squad news for Everton v Coventry
Everton have a team in perfect condition with only Grealish absent. Jarrad Branthwaite returned to the starting line-up against Newcastle after missing two games due to concussion protocols. He was sent off in the 82nd minute, but Moyes confirmed that it was only a slip.
Lampard will leave it late to decide whether to include Bobby Thomas and Frank Onyeka.
Thomas missed the Sunderland game with a calf injury, while Onyeka was also absent with a groin strain.
