It wasn’t Scotland defenders in sight as Beauden Barrett completed the double at Murrayfield on Saturday night in Edinburgh, scoring his 49th and 50th Test tries for All black people.
The 148-Test veteran, who has now equaled Richie McCaw’s Test tally, walked in twice against Scotland thanks to two try assists from All Blacks first-five Damian McKenzie.
Barrett is the first of Nations Championship the contest stemmed from pressure from the All Blacks inside the 22, on the 30-minute line. Roigard threw to McKenzie, who weighed his options, firing a beautifully measured pass to Barrett, who ran straight through the Scotland defence.
The playmaker’s second finish was a strong move from the back line, where McKenzie once again found his full-back in space, this time extending the lead to 15 points.
All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie has made it clear that despite doubts about his form from some in the public, Barrett’s position in the group has not changed.
“yes, look, everything we I know Fr Beauden, I I know they exist people out there thinking that he is the past that, but he is in an environment here where we really value his experience,” Rennie admitted after the match.
“He is a the truth professional. I like it to everyone wants that play, and even when he is no playing, it is it hurts. He is doing everything he I can that help others and to prepare the team good. I what we were confident in was that if he Got his opportunity, he would bar up in front.
Rennie explained that it was not Barrett’s only good performance this season, as they were impressed by him during the midweek matches in South Africa.
“I he played good at 15 for us, ua couple of the provincial games in South Africa. therefore, obviously, it is the the reason we are to the left him at 15 and played Damian McKenzie at 10.
“He’s was excellent, and It’s me really Rapt for him. He is an important part of this group, and nice that he is playing good as so.”
The All Blacks head coach was full of praise for Beauden’s younger brothers, Jordie and Scott, with the latter adding to what Rennie’s side missed during the four-Test series against the Springboks.
“yes, no, it is was great (for Scott to come back). He is only Got a big engine, a a lot of unseen things around tackle and wear and clean, barge, which is our sort of counter–ruck type thing. So he is was great.
“I thought Fabian also had a big the game again tonight, and both of them the big men are it goes 80. SFr we are Got a number of second rows WHO Got big engines and I can to play 80 minute, which is a bonus for us.”
