Clippers Waive Johni Broome | Hoops Rumors

4:38 p.m.: Broome has been waived, the Clippers announced.

4:20 p.m.: The Clippers former Auburn star is being waived of John Broomeaccording to reports from Jake Fisher of The Stein Line and Bleacher Report and Lou Murray of The Athletic (Twitter references).

Los Angeles is facing a roster shortage this fall, and Broome, who was selected 35th overall in last year’s draft, will be the first casualty of that situation. The Clippers still owe Broome $2.15 million in salary this season, assuming a rival team doesn’t claim him off waivers.

As we noted when we registered in the Clippers’ offseason a few days ago, the team had 16 players under guaranteed contracts, but they have a nice chunk of breathing room below both the luxury tax limit (about $15.1 million) and the first apron cost ($23.7 million). Going down 6’10” won’t change that math, as his guaranteed contract has already been settled.

Broome always seemed like the most obvious candidate of the 16 players to waive, as he was owed the least amount of guaranteed money and was purchased over the summer mainly because the Sixers attached a future second-round pick to move his contract. Broome’s deal technically runs through 2028/29, but only $2.15 million was guaranteed for 2026/27.

The 24-year-old center/forward made just 11 NBA appearances as a rookie for Philadelphia last season, averaging 0.9 points and 1.5 rebounds in 9.0 minutes per game. Broome too appeared in 26 G League games (32.2 MPG) with the 76ers’ affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, averaging 21.8 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 3.2 APG, 1.5 BPG and 1.1 SPG on .464/.287/.656 shooting.

Broome suffered tore the lateral meniscus in his right knee in late February while playing for the Blue Coats, ending his season in the NBAGL prematurely after he partial meniscectomy in a few days. He returned to action in the NBA playoffs, playing some sharp minutes in a pair of blowout losses to the Knicks in the second round.

The Clippers have so far October 15 to decide if they want to guarantee Cam ChristieSalary $2.3 million for this season. Barring a trade, it looks like he will be waived before the deadline.
