Nothing compares to experiencing the first round of March Madness at a Las Vegas sportsbook, but I’ll add the first NFL Sunday to any fan’s bucket list.
With the growth of fantasy football and the spread of player proposition betting, the energy has gotten worse with every game. The biggest step I took from immersing myself in the Vegas book for the umpteenth time was cheering and yelling every time a player got close to the end zone. Simply put, every play now seems to have higher stakes and thus more involvement.
Let’s recap the first Sunday, then gather actionable information for Week 2 and beyond.
Chargers survivor pool carnage.
Sunday’s biggest domino was undoubtedly the Los Angeles Chargers dropping a big egg in a loss to the 9.5-point home favorites Arizona Cardinals — the biggest Week 1 upset since 2018.
This has sparked several moneyline parlays and survivor pool entries, with the Chargers being the most popular choice on Yahoo (over 32 percent). Notably, the infamous Circa Survivor saw nearly a third of its 25,017 entries (at $1,000 each) bolted – and by the way, that included me in the carnage. The eventual winner(s) of $25.017 million will look forward to avoiding that early blowout.
It’s a tough pill to swallow considering the Jacksonville Jaguars (-8.5) were easy picks with a 34-10 win over the same home favorites as the lowly Cleveland Browns. Cleveland still looks like it might be the worst team in the league.
A decade ago the Browns went 7-24-1 including the spread (ATS) over two years, 1-31 and all it took was one quarter of Deshaun Watson’s brilliance and we could be in familiar territory.

Live betting chaos in Detroit
While the Chargers crushed opponents on the final board, the high drama came early in Detroit, with parlays and surviving entries experiencing the full range of emotions — from a rocking chair winner to an overtime sweat.
The New Orleans Saints trail the Detroit Lions 21-0 midway through the third quarter at DraftKings live money line +7800 — but those long-shot tickets are out of money ($10 bets pay $780). Tyler Shaw’s two-point pass attempt sailed over Noah Fant to give Detroit a 31-30 overtime victory to avoid the fall.

Prop betting is growing in popularity
Recreational bettors like to risk a little to win a lot. This is a promising concept since casinos created slots and sportsbooks. However, that dopamine rush has been heightened in recent years by those involving proposition bets. For the NFL, that means touchdowns and same-play parlays.
When Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor scored the first play of the game against the Baltimore Ravens, there was a little buzz. After leading the league with 20 total touchdowns last season, the -190 parlay is a -190 parlay for many of the public’s odds that he will deliver again.
When Carolina Panthers tight end Darren Waller caught a ball in the end zone against the Chicago Bears, there was a huge roar as he was ticketed +2500 for his first TD of the game. That was quickly extinguished after a referee called offensive pass interference.
“Our odds grow every year,” said DraftKings Sportsbook Director Johnny Avello. The athletics. “Going back to the retail area, the biggest time was the Super Bowl and maybe the Finals. We put some in during the week, but nothing big. Now we’re doing it for every game and expanding, including first touchdown and any time TD and then multiple TDs.”

We no longer have to wait for the Super Bowl to influence the prospects’ bets every game.
The 1st week with the highest score in history

With Monday Night Football still to go, this is on pace to be the highest-scoring week since the 1969-70 merger. This is particularly surprising given that the midweek games each had a turnover total.
Then a game of nearly 100 points skews those numbers. The Chicago Bears played Ben Johnson as the team’s head coach. They spoke The athletics He wanted them to be this season: “The highest-scoring offense ever. They capped a high-scoring week Sunday with a 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers. That, along with a dramatic shootout in Houston as the Buffalo Bills beat the Texans 36-31, made history.”

Nine of the 13 games played on Sunday have produced results, which is an impressive result. Entering the day, the Week 1 underdog was 54-22 over the past four seasons and 25-9 over the past two-plus seasons.
One last note
One thing worth noting for this Thursday night and the rest of the season: Over the past two-plus seasons, no NFL quarterback has a better second-half punt record than Josh Allen. After Sunday’s game-winning touchdown drive, the former MVP is now 30-9 ATS, matching his mark in Advanced Stats after the break.
