Why Do My Wedge Shots Keep Pulling Left?

The idea for this article came about because I am known to shoot my left wedge shots.

It’s not every hit and it’s not always a big miss, but it happens enough that I know the pattern well. I think some may be a proper problem with my wedges but that’s a story for another day.

Some are just me.

It is frustrating because these are the clubs with which the pins should be attached. When I have a wedge in my hands, I try to give a good look at the birds, not look at the ball that starts 15 feet to the left of where I was looking.

If the same thing happens to you, there are a few things worth checking before you start making major swing changes.

1. Make sure that you are not left target

I know this seems obvious, but it’s the only place to start. Wedge setups tend to be different than our full-swing setups. The stance becomes narrower and many golfers like to open their feet a little.

You can open up your stance and hit perfectly straight shots. But if you already have a tendency to swing the club left, an open stance can make this tendency easier to exaggerate.

Put an alignment stick and check where your feet are headed. If you tend to pull wedges, try moving your stance closer to the frame and see what happens to your starting line.

2. Check your ball position

I don’t like to push a ball too far back in my stance with a wedge, but if the ball is rolling too far forward, it could be the reason for your pull. If your swing is already moving to the left and the ball is too far forward, it can cause the ball to start even further to the left. Try putting the ball in the middle and see if that fixes anything.

3. Look over your shoulders

Your feet can be square and your shoulders can always be directed to the left.

If your right shoulder (right-handed golfer) is pushed forward at address, your upper body may begin to point to the left. When you are on the ball, look at your feet and think that everything is fine. Take a few down the line videos and see if you can get a good look at what your shoulders are doing when you’re sitting down. Sometimes dropping the right shoulder back a little helps to avoid the pull.

4. Then look at the way to the club

If your setup looks good and the ball is still starting to miss, the fairway is the next place to look.

A pull starts left because the clubface is pointed to the left of the target at impact. If the ball starts left and stays relatively straight, your club path is often going too left.

A simple drill is to put an alignment stick on the ground that points a little to the right of your target and take a few shorter swings that feel like the club is traveling more in that direction.

It might feel like you’re swinging too far to the right. If your normal pattern is left, that exaggeration may be exactly what you need.

The main thing is not to assume that a pulled wedge means your entire swing needs repair. Start with alignment, ball position and shoulders. So look at the road. For me, it’s almost always the shoulders that cause the problem. When I open my stance to a softer stroke, my shoulder tends to get in the wrong place.
