As the football-watching world tries to figure out the problem(s) with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, Rams safety Quentin Lake delivered a scathing critique of Herbert’s most recent performance, in a 24-9 loss to the Rams.
“He was throwing deli meat in there,” Lake said. “He is seeing ghosts. I don’t know what’s going on, but we knew we were going to have a couple. At least one.”
They got two.
On Wednesday, both Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh and Herbert himself were asked about Lake’s comments.
“As far as anyone’s opinion I don’t see it“Harbaugh told reporters. “Everybody’s entitled to their opinion. Not what I see.”
So what did Harbaugh see in the latest loss?
“I thought he played — he did his job extremely well,” Harbaugh said. “You know, two shots he would have liked to get back.”
Herbert said he was unaware of Lake’s comments.
“I haven’t looked into itI haven’t heard anything about it, so I can’t comment on it,” Herbert told reporters. “We’re really focused on what’s going on in the building, playing football and doing what we can and doing our best to, you know, go do our best on Sunday. And that’s all that really matters. Anything beyond that is out of our control.”
Still, it’s annoying to hear an NFL quarterback make comments about a supposed franchise quarterback that make him look like a Jets first-round pick who has yet to slow down. Herbert is in the seventh year of his career. He earns $52.5 million a year.
Something happened this year. It’s not yet clear what it is, or if it will change. Before that changes, the Chargers need to realize there is a problem.
And this is the most confusing part of it all. They have lost seven and won none; at times, they look like they’ve won seven and lost none.
