FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys entered this week looking like they had training camp in exceptional health.
That changed Monday when Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer announced that Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith will undergo thumb surgery on Tuesday. He will be placed on injured reserve with the hope that he will be back in four to six weeks. Senior offensive tackle TJ Bass will now start at left guard.
Smith is Dallas’ best forward, so this is a huge loss. The Cowboys were expecting to enter the season with one of the NFL’s best offensive line interiors with Smith, center Cooper Beebe and right guard Tyler Booker.
The Cowboys should still have one of the league’s top offenses without Smith, but with French quarterback Dak Prescott, the passing game will need to get the ball out quickly, and the running game will likely take a step back.
