Golfers love wedge spin.
Put two wedges on a launch monitor and if one produces 7,200 rpm while another produces 6,800, it’s easy to assume that the first one gives you more control.
But if the goal is to hit wedge shots close to the hole, spin is only part of the equation.
Our 2026 wedge test included 15 wedges and 11,400 shots in full swing, 50-yard dry shots and 50-yard wet shots. The results are a good reminder that you probably shouldn’t choose a wedge chasing the biggest number of spins.
More spin is helpful, but it’s not the ultimate goal
U Performance Golf ONE.1 produced the most spin in our 50-yard dry test at 7,217 rpm.
SPN V3 of New Level it was slightly lower at 7,062 rpm. He finished those shots an average of 6.9 feet from the hole and finished as the most accurate wedge in our 2026 test. The Performance Golf ONE finished about 10 inches farther on average for the 50-yard dry shot.
Ten centimeters is not much, but it appeared at other distances as well. Across the different shots we tested, the highest number of spins didn’t always produce the best closeness. The spin number by itself does not tell you how close your shots are to finishing.
A wedge always has to control distance and direction. You can hit a shot directly at the flag and leave it well short. You can still produce a lot of spin, but you have enough variation in carry distance that your shots end up scattered both long and short of the target.
This is why the shipping window matters.
If one wedge still carries 50 yards while another bounces between 47 and 53, the second wedge can produce all the spin in the world and still be harder to control.
Moisture can quickly change the print
This is where the emphasis on a dry spin number becomes even more misleading.
U UN.1 produced 7,217 rpm on the 50 yard dry shot. When moisture was introduced, the spin dropped to 3,506 rpm.
Now compare with the Vokey SM11.
Vokey produced 6,857 rpm dry and 6,860 rpm wet. Essentially nothing has changed. This performance in various conditions helped the SM11 finish as our best spin wedge in 2026.
Humidity doesn’t just change the number in the spin column.
As the spin and launch change, the carry can change with them. The ball can fly differently, land differently and react differently once it hits the green.
If your wedge behaves one way from a clean and dry fairway and another way when there is dew on the grass, which makes it more difficult to predict the shot.
Even the wedge design tells us there is more to it than spin
U Vokey SM11 is a good example.
Their groove profiles change depending on the loft because different wedges are required to do different jobs.
Pitching and gap wedges place more emphasis on consistency and distance control. Sand wedges have to balance full shots with touch shots. Lob wedges place more emphasis on greenside spin.
The goal is not just to squeeze the highest number of rpm possible from each loft.
The spin you need from a full pitching wedge is not necessarily the same thing you need for a 30 yard lob shot. In both cases, try to produce a predictable combination of launching, carrying and stopping power.

What should you look for when trying on wedges?
Pay attention to spin. You need enough to create the flight and stopping power you want.
It just doesn’t stop there.
Hit the shots at an actual number and watch your transport window. Look at where the whole group finishes, not just your best shot. Pay attention to whether the ball launches in a similar window and whether your misses are reasonably close to the target.
If you can see how the wedge behaves with humidity, this is also useful information.
The wedge that produces the highest number of spins could end up being the right one for you. It might as well not.
What you’re really looking for is a predictable combination of launch, spin, carry and proximity.
The place Wedge Spin is not the same as control. Here’s what 11,400 shots showed appeared first MyGolfSpy.
