Oct. 23: The United States will host the first Women’s Club World Cup in 2028, FIFA confirmed Thursday.
In a statement, the world governing body said that: “The decision was taken taking into account FIFA’s experience in organizing tournaments, the maturity of its infrastructure and services and the level of interest among stakeholders in women’s football in the country.”
Last year, the United States hosted the inaugural 32-team Men’s Club World Cup and last summer, the country co-hosted the first 48-team World Cup, generating a record $15 billion in profit. The Women’s World Cup will be played every four years.
“We carried out a detailed assessment to identify the most suitable host for the inaugural edition of the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup,” said FIFA’s head of women’s football, Sarai Bareman.
“Ultimately, the United States’ recent excellence in hosting top FIFA tournaments, combined with significant interest in women’s soccer there and its elite sports infrastructure, made the country the standout choice.”
No official tender was made for the rights to host the event.
The competition will be held from January 5 to January 30, 2028, but the host cities have not yet been announced. Arsenal (England), Club America (Mexico), Barcelona (Spain), Gotham FC (United States), Naegohyang Women’s FC (North Korea), SC Corinthians (Brazil) and Wuhan Jiangda WFC (China) have confirmed their place in the final.
The field will feature six teams from UEFA, three from AFC, CAF, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, and one from OFC.
The United States will also host the 2027 Women’s Champions Cup, with Miami hosting the tournament from January 26-31 following a schedule change. Earlier this year, Arsenal won the inaugural edition, defeating Brazil’s Corinthians.
