Preview of Atlético de Madrid-Real Madrid
Atlético de Madrid host Real Madrid at the Metropolitano on Sunday afternoon in a derby that already has early significance in the title race. Jose Mourinho’s side are second in La Liga with 15 points, while Diego Simeone’s Atletico are fourth with 13 after finding their feet after a difficult opening in September.
Real Madrid needed a stoppage-time goal from Carlos Espi to beat Elche 3-2 in the last tie, the 21-year-old’s second goal in the 90th minute or later this season following his heroics against Espanyol in August. Atlético, meanwhile, responded to back-to-back defeats against Athletic Club and Liverpool with a 3-0 win at Real Sociedad and a 4-0 thrashing of Osasuna in midweek.
Simeone said: “A derby is different. There is a tension and a great rivalry that we have managed to recover in the last 15 years.”
The match will see old foes Simeone and Mourinho face off once again.
“I have great respect for Mourinho,” added Simeone. “I’m a fan of his, he knows how much I appreciate him. I hope we can compete like we did when we had to face each other.”
