September 16 – Spanish media giant Telefónica has extended its sub-licensing deal with DAZN, so Movistar Plus will carry all LaLiga matches for the next five seasons.
The non-exclusive deal, now approved by Spain’s securities regulator, will see Telefónica pay DAZN €1.65 billion to distribute the platform’s LaLiga package until 2031-32.
That’s five of the 10 games each week on pay TV, averaging €330m per season, up from €280m in the current deal. Movistar Plus customers keep all the LaLiga action, because Telefónica and Movistar already hold the other five weekly matches separately.
The wider figures make the eyes water. Both domestic packages were awarded at the end of last year, with total residential fees over the five seasons reaching €5.25 billion. Each station gets one of the two annual Classics and an equal share of the first picks.
One major change is that, while the five-game format remains, Movistar’s exclusive three-day window is removed, which is why DAZN has increased its money.
The deal comes a month into the season, amid a flurry of LaLiga overseas deals, including a DAZN deal for sub-Saharan Africa. Telefónica also has the exclusive rights to UEFA clubs in Spain for the period 2027-31.
