Bayern Munich Manager Vincent Kompany is in a “stable” condition after collapsing on the training ground but recovery could take “weeks”, according to the club’s sporting director Max Eberl.
Kompany was rushed to hospital on Friday after collapsing at the club’s training ground. Early reports indicated the 40-year-old was in a stable condition, but Eberl has confirmed he has spoken to the Belgian.
“He’s going to spend a few more days in the hospital until everything is checked out,” Eberl said at a news conference Saturday.
“It shows again how health is the most important thing in life, not football.”
Eberl said the incident happened while Kompany, who has been dealing with a viral infection in recent days, was supervising an under-23s training session.
“Vinnie will get all the time,” Eberl said. “We’re not going to start setting a timetable. We have to figure out what the problem is, and then it’s about what the recovery time will be. We’re not talking days, we’re talking weeks.
“He will only come back when he is fit.
“He’s in the best hands. The best we can do is support him emotionally with energy and love.”
Kompany had been in the dugout for Bayern’s 6-1 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig last weekend but did not take part in any media engagements.
Kompany was also present for Bayern draw 2-2 with Arsenal Wednesday in the Champions League despite his illness.
Bayern, who lead the Bundesliga on goal difference from Borussia Dortmund, visit third-placed Freiburg on Sunday.
