This has been the standard for WWE and AEW over the years cover their wrestlers’ surgeriesespecially the bigger names. But now WWE is making news by covering the surgery for a luchador who, despite a brief stint with WWE a few decades ago, is otherwise unaffiliated with the promotion. Recently Wrestling Observer Newsletter:Dave Meltzer has revealed that WWE has paid for hip replacement surgery for Dionisio Castellanos, better known as Luchador Psicosis and Nico el Millonario.
The decision to pay for the surgery, which is believed to have cost $44,000, was made by WWE President Nick Khan and was aided by Psycozy being under contract to the WWE legend. However, Meltzer describes the operation as “the mastermind” of WWE luchador Rey Mysterio. Along with Juventud Guerrera, Psicos is considered Mysterio’s main rival in the early stages of his career. Their rivalry spanned promotions such as AAA, Japanese promotion WAR, ECW, and WCW, with the two notably competing in the infamous opening match at Bashum Beach in 1996, the site of the nWo’s formation.
Even aside from his matches with Mysterio, Psicos had a memorable career, winning the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship twice, the AAA World Tag Team Championship with Joe Leader, and the Mexican National Middleweight Championship twice. He would compete briefly for WWE From 2005 to 2006 as part of the controversial Mexicools stable alongside Guerrera and Super Crazy. Until two years ago, he continued to compete in Mexico after the injury, he had to have an emergency hip operation. He was inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame that same year.
