Grayson Waller defeated Tony D’Angelo to retain the NXT Championship at “WWE NXT” Halloween Demolition, then revealed he would face CM Punk.
D’Angelo started the match strong, tossing Waller out of the ring, bringing him back in, and then proceeded to beat him down from the other side of the ring. D’Angelo chased once more, but was sent into the steel steps. He quickly remedied that though by backing Waller up the steps.
D’Angelo eventually fell victim to an eye rake and neckbreaker, and Waller continued to focus on the neck, using the ring skirt to turn his opponent around before digging a knee against the ropes.
The action broke out again as Waller DDTed D’Angelo onto the steel steps. He proceeded to goad D’Angelo’s wife and son into the crowd, causing an enraged D’Angelo to beat down the champion and drive him into the steel steps once more.
Waller continued to hit D’Angelo with a Rolling Cutter to put him through the announcer’s desk, and he looked to follow up with a second in the ring, but was planted with a chokeslam instead.
D’Angelo considered using the crowbar before the referee intervened, collapsing in the next scramble and not being able to count when D’Angelo hit Waller. It also allowed Waller to personally hit D’Angelo with the crowbar following the roll bar for the winning shot.
After the match, Dunnhausen introduced a special message from CM Punk, announcing that he would challenge Waller for the NXT Championship. Wednesday’s show.
D’Angelo challenged for the title, which he lost to Waller in a four-way match that also featured Cruz Montana and Zilla Fatu at Heatwave in August. Waller was making only his second defense, sending E.K. Prosperine.
