1 October: The World Leagues Association (WLA) has published practical guidance on the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP), approved in June 2026 and applicable from January 2027.
The guide provides a concise overview of the key changes introduced by the revised RSTP and highlights the main aspects that leagues and clubs will need to consider as the new framework comes into effect in January 2027.
The revised rules are significant for their far-reaching impact following the ruling of the Court of Justice of the EU in the Diarra case, which declared that certain provisions of the RSTP were incompatible with European Union laws, particularly those governing the consequences of illegal termination of players’ contracts.
European law is key, as European clubs account for 80% of global spending on international transfers.
The World Leagues Association was part of the stakeholder group that worked on the revised RSTP, which introduces a revised framework for determining sporting liability, compensation and sanctions in cases of breach of contract.
“The new regulations also introduce several changes to increase legal certainty and predictability within the international transfer system and create a platform for social dialogue at FIFA level,” the WLA said.
“The guidance has been developed to help leagues and clubs better understand the new framework and its practical implications for the international transfer system.”
