The Wizards re-signed in advance Anthony Gillaccording to a team press release.
In six seasons with Washington, Gill played in 285 games (23 starts), averaging 3.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. In 55 games (eight starts) last season, he averaged 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 62.8 percent from the field.
Gill, who will turn 34 in October, was signed one-year contract before last season. Terms of his latest contract have not been released, but it will likely be a one-year deal in the veteran minimum range. Washington is heavy on the first tax apron.
The Wizards have room for Gill — they started the day with 14 players on standard contracts, 13 of which were guaranteed.
According to Josh Robbins of The Athletic (Twitter references), Gill attended a 9/11 event with his Wizards teammates. The Wizards left a final roster spot open in case another team wants to forgo a guaranteed contract and wants to include a draft pick, such as a second-round pick. Washington’s front office and coaching staff value Gill in part because of the way he treats and mentors teammates, but also because of his ability and willingness to play off the bench in just about any role in the frontcourt, Robbins adds.
After going undrafted out of Virginia in 2016, Gill began his professional career overseas, playing in Turkey for Yesilgiresun Belediye in the 2016-17 season, before spending three years with Russian club Khimki, who were playing in the Euroleague at the time. He parlayed his strong play internationally into multiple contracts with the Wizards, his first and only NBA team to date.
