The latest Mizuno M.Craft XZ putter release took me a bit by surprise. For some reason, I had it in my head that the 2025 M.Craft X line of modular putters was more of an annual line of perennial putters.
(Shout out to all the botanists out there…)
He won’t be alone Mizuno M.Craft X putter line continue until 2027, but Mizuno grows the line by adding two new shoulders and a new neck option.
Since the four front sections and the five back sections are all interchangeable, this brings the total number of possible putter combinations to 20.
In terms of manufacturing efficiency, it’s a solid strategy. Mizuno can offer 20 different putters while producing only nine components. Designing and manufacturing 20 individual putter heads would be much more expensive.
Maybe that’s why Mizuno is able to sell M.Craft X putters at an MSRP of $400. That price is below the retail price for many other ground putters these days.
Let’s take another look at the modularity of the Mizuno M.Craft X putter line and then discover the new components.
Well made modular putters

I was impressed with the perfect modularity of the original version. Mizuno has packed so much intelligence into the M.Craft X design For example, only weights are used to attach the front and rear sections.
All you need is a $20 adapter and a standard golf club Torx wrench to unscrew the weights and you can swap the back with reckless abandon.

The fit between the front and rear components is spectacularly snug. Rubber bumpers in the rear section help with the tight fit while eliminating any unpleasant vibrations on impact.
U M.Craft X putter it is made of several parts, but feels like a single piece putter during the game.
The aspect of safe form is as important as modularity. No golfer wants to play a putter that sounds and feels like a barrel full of steel marbles.
Fit and favor

These putters are a tinkerer’s dream, but many who buy one Mizuno M.Craft X putter never exchange its components. For these golfers, the modularity of the M.Craft X line proves its worth in the putter fitting stage.
The three original faces each featured a different neck style. These necks facilitate different amounts of opening and closing of the putter face during the stroke. Ideally, a golfer can match the characteristics of the putter to his individual needs.

If you have a swing path with minimal arch, go with the double-bend “B” face construction. For a light bow stroke, choose the “P” face with the fountain neck. If you need a lot of movement of the face, the construction of the “S” face of the inclined neck is the call.
For the back section, golfers can choose the shape that best suits their eyes at address. If you like your deck square, go with the Back Four. The Cinque turns the M.Craft X in a round bunch. Fans of Fang Mallet should select the Six back.
The new shoulder options

Even with nine combinations of faces and shoulders in the original M.Craft X release, some golfers may not be able to build their desired putter.
To rectify this, Mizuno has added two new shoulders and a new face/neck component to the line. The two new rear sections are interesting. The Back Two is a wide body blade design with slightly flared rear corners.

The Three is rounded like the Five but the overall shape is more like the dome. Be warned, this convex shape makes it impossible to scoop balls.
However, the elevated central region raises the line of sight to a position closer to the ball’s equator. This creates a unique alignment scheme.

As with the other three shoulders, your specific alignment needs, and what suits your eye, will influence your shoulder selection.
Mizuno positioned the overall center of gravity towards the front of the putter to make it feel like a blade. Most of the weight of the putter will be in the forged and milled carbon steel front section.

About the new “Z” in the name

The “Z” at the end of the Mizuno M.Craft XZ there is because the new front section is a zero-torque design. Mizuno reversed the position of the shaft on the hydraulic neck creating the start rather than the usual offset.
This new hosel directs the shaft axis to the center of gravity of the putter head. By doing so, the putter now balances without torque around the center of gravity.

Other companies used similar hosels to eliminate torque, but it seemed unlikely that this design could eliminate torque for all five rear options.
The zero-torque trick is the modular construction. Most of the weight, and the center of gravity, is in the forward section of the putter. The axis of the shaft enters the head approximately between the soles of the weights.

Does swapping the rear section affect CG location and torque?
All five M.Craft X the rear sections have the same center of gravity. This means that if you swap the rear sections, it will not affect the torque.
Although the shapes of the M.Craft X Z2 and the M.Craft X Z3 are dramatically different, they both have the same toe hang profile. Because they are balanced at the CG, both weld in any toe position when rotated.
Getting all five rear parts to be truly interchangeable and maintain the zero torque profile is a piece of engineering.

Are you more of a fitter or tinkerer?

Initially, I thought Mizuno did M.Craft X line for those of us who like to change things up with our putters. By making modular putters, changing things because you have “chapter” can be done by removing only two weights.
I can see myself trading for several permutations after a particularly poor putting round.

As a bonus, the cost for the components is much less than the cost of twenty putters. You mean I can save money and still tinker? sign me up
The more I think about it, the more I don’t think Mizuno had tinkerers like me in mind when they designed the M.Craft X line.
I hate to admit it, but the real benefit may be for “one and done” putter builders.

My guess is that Mizuno realized that the modular nature of the M.Craft X line makes an exceptional putter fitting system. Shops with an M.Craft X component set can work with customers to figure out the best front and rear component configuration for that player.
The fitter can quickly swap the putter elements in and out, allowing the customer to see what really makes the difference. When they finish testing all the options, the customer knows that the putter they are buying is the right one.

It’s a good plan and everyone in the process wins. Mizuno gets 20 putter models without making 20 putter models. The shop can accommodate the entire range of options without having 20 putters in stock. Finally, the customer leaves with the most suitable putter.
If they want to come to the dark side and trade in a new rear section, those can be bought on paper from Mizuno for $150.
