Liverpool Striker Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt from Eintracht Frankfurt will join the Germany camp early after injuries to Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala.
Musiala did not feature in Germany’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League due to a muscle injury sustained in the warm-up.
Havertz went off with an injury at half-time, and new manager Jurgen Klopp admitted afterwards that either was unlikely to feature in Sunday’s game with Greece.
Klopp called up 44 players in his first German squad, which he split into two. Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen is the only player to appear in both groups.
The first group was chosen to take part in the first two games of an extended international break, and the second group was chosen for a match with Serbia and a second leg with Greece.
Wirtz and Burkardt had been selected as part of the second group but will now be in contention to play against Greece in Augsburg after replacing Havertz and Musiala.
Klopp has a chance to work magic with Wirtz
Ahead of the international break, Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher expressed his hope that Klopp could get the best out of Wirtz amid the Reds’ continued struggles to impact games.
Frustrated by Wirtz’s performance in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth last time out, Carragher told “The Jamie Carragher Podcast‘: “The only hope for Liverpool fans now is that Jurgen Klopp is Germany manager.
“Wirtz is going with the German team for three weeks, and he’s clearly one of the best players in Germany, that’s how they see him. Can Jurgen Klopp sprinkle some stardust on him in that position?
“Jurgen is one of the best managers in the world, we know that. And what he gets out of the players is probably more than most managers because of the nature of his personality, and fingers crossed something can happen for him.
“There is a scenario that Jurgen Klopp and Germany have a big international window, he scores a lot of goals, assists and returns to a high. Manchester City is the next game, he makes an impact, everything is forgotten, everything is forgiven. There is a potential change there.”
“I’d like that to happen, I’d love it to be the match-winner against Manchester City.”
Klopp will now have an extended opportunity to work with the oft-criticized Wirtz, who has 11 goals in 45 games for his country.
