What these former NHL stars think about their golf games | News

If there’s anything better than being a professional athlete, it’s being a retired professional athlete who’s really good at golf. You can extend your competitive career, only now the stakes are a little lower and the equipment is very different.

Brenden Morrow has taken that path, competing on the Pro Tour, an invitation-only circuit for retired professional athletes. Fellow ex-NHLer Mike Commodore can still hit the golf course, though he’s not quite convinced his game is ready for the Pro Tour.

Morrow and Commodore recently appeared together as guests GOLF Subpar podcastin an episode recorded at the member-guest at the Bounty Club in Nashville. There, the pair sat down with co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz for a conversation that wandered from the track to the driving range and beyond.

Morrow, a former NHL All-Star, is known for his skill set and intensity on the course. His teammates even called him “the angriest golfer on the planet,” a reference to the high standards he sets for himself. Being tough on himself has served him well on the Pro Tour, where he ranks among the top players. Commodore, meanwhile, had his own moment in the spotlight when he suggested he wasn’t good enough to compete on the Pro Tour.

Knost was not buying. He remembered a time to Gozzer Ranch in Idaho when the Commodore was 6-under par standing on the 18th tee.

“I birdied the 17th hole and knew where everyone was,” Knost recalled. “Losing outright to Commodore would be hard to swallow.”

Fortunately for Knost, Commodore cut his final shot badly. “That ball is always going well,” Knost said.

The boys also traded stories about hockey fights, including players who wanted to take a swing.
