Jack Rudoni scored City of CoventryFirst Premier League goal at the CBS Arena as his penalty gave them a 1-0 lead Newcastle United.
The Sky Blues, back in the top flight for the first time since 2001 when they played at Highfield Road, picked up their first win of the season before the international break with a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest.
They had yet to find the back of the net in their first two home games, but ended with that duck in the sixth minute against the Magpies, with Rudoni’s chance to do so through a mistake by Newcastle keeper Lukas Hornicek.
Hornicek failed to collect a loose ball in the penalty area under pressure from Ephron Mason-Clark, and in trying to recover it was brought down by Sidiki Cherif, who went down under the Czech international’s challenge.
The referee showed little hesitation in awarding the spot, and Rudoni made no mistake, sending Hornicek the wrong way to break the deadlock.
Harvey Barnes had the first chance for Newcastle, who started the game 11th in the Premier League but with chances to go fourth with a win, but spurned the chance to equalize after good work down the left from Matias Fernández-Pardo.
