put Archie Gray Tottenham underway for a third consecutive year Premier League win as he led them to the front Crystal Palace after Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card.
Mateta was sent off for the first time as a Palace player in the 13th minute after referee Michael Oliver ordered VAR on the pitch monitor.
The Frenchman caught Micky van de Ven in the Achilles with a sliding challenge and, after replays were checked, Oliver brandished the forward with a straight red card.
Palace held on for 12 minutes before Gray broke the deadlock, heading a corner on goal and beyond Dean Henderson to leave the 10-man visitors with a mountain to climb.
Back-to-back Premier League defeats to Brighton and Hove Albion, who they lost 5-0 to, and Newcastle United had piled the pressure on Palace manager Pierre Sage heading into this London derby.
And, after a difficult first half in north London, more scrutiny is likely to come on Sage, with Palace left staring at a third successive league defeat.
